Assimil Il Tedesco Senza Sforzo MP3 7700M .Pages Wednesday, March 29, 2011 Three O's, part five: The open road March 29th, 2011 I've talked about the three O's before: The open road, open range, open season. But maybe this series needs to delve a little deeper, so let's look at them a little more closely. First, though, I'd like to ask a question. It's a rather self-referential one that comes in part from the title of this blog, and partly from a movie that has been around for about two decades. What is the name of the last movie to depict the showdown between runaway American youth and the US government? You'd probably be surprised at how long it took me to come up with that answer. Now, for what it's worth, my best guess is probably "Dirty Harry," but that's a pretty good bet, and it's not from any movie this writer was named after. Anyway, the essential premise is that a great American (or Canadian) hero is standing in front of the American flag saying how he won't let the bad guys kill him. A great American vigilante standing up to the government. Harry Callahan, if you will. Of course, it won't end that way. We know that because we see it happen in that very movie. So now you know the answer to our question. Next we have a linguistic clue, and what a clue it is! It appears in the words open road, open range, and open season. First, though, let's look at "open." Wiktionary says, "The object is generally taken in the widest possible sense, from real things open to public view or use, and expressing what the exposed portion of the object seems to offer, or the capacity of the object to offer; as, the open air, the open prospect." So what does this mean? First, it means that the open road, open range, and open season have much more than just names for things. They are all about concepts. They are not just about the things themselves, the things themselves are part of the concepts. The open range is open to public use, for instance. The open road means that anybody can use it. The open season is open to hunting, so that anyone can hunt. Of course, that's only part of the story.
